Together with live video artist A-LI-CE, I was invited to create a video mapping for the music festival Musique Volantes 22 in Metz, France.
In the courtyard of the festival venue, we let a wild and mysterious forest take over. Its inhabitants—a cast of hybrid creatures—are eyed suspiciously by dark silhouettes behind the windows, until an unstoppable storm begins to brew inside the building.
The video mapping consists of two parts: an unobtrusive but playfully eerie video installation and a 15-minute live performance presented once each evening.
For the visuals, A-LI-CE worked mainly with handmade drawings and paper collages, which she digitised, animated and enhanced with effects in post-production. I tried to preserve this analogue feel and approach in the music as well.
While the sound for the video installation is limited to the ambience of a fantastical and eerie forest, the music for the live performance evokes science fiction and horror film scores from the late 1950s and 1960s, with sound design that draws on familiar film noir clichés. Starting with vintage sounds and orchestral textures, the music becomes increasingly electronic as the show unfolds, until it finally breaks apart into (ar)rhythmic samples and goes out with a loud bang in the showdown.
I also took care of the technical planning, including selecting the projectors and lenses needed to cover the building façades from a short projection distance. Many thanks to my lovely colleagues Tina Ayvaski and Christian Möltner at Eidotech GmbH for their support!
