Based on amateur and family film archives from the 1920s to the present day, Intruders is an audiovisual memory remix of anonymous stories and portraits—a dancing conversation with our own ghosts. Drawn by nostalgia and voyeurism, we embark on a journey through time, increasingly followed by the familiar, suspicious and curious glances of unknown figures seeking our attention in the present. Intruding into our collective memory, these images use their own histories to feed our emotions and internalised fictions.
Intruders is co-produced by the video art residency Bandits-Mages and the French film archive Ciclic. Inspired by 4,000 films viewed and 26 hours of collected archival footage, it is a unique contemporary historical document featuring more than 2,000 audio and video sequences sampled and manipulated live. Exploring collective memory as well as the intimacy and transience of being, this audiovisual performance retains a timeless relevance in today’s interconnected media society, which constantly produces new archives.
