Together with the live video artist A-LI-CE, I was invited to create a video mapping for the music festival MUSIQUES VOLANTES 22 in Metz (France). To serve the festival’s topic „Monster“, we let sprawl on the walls of the urban festival location a wild and mysterious forest, while behind the windows dark silhuettes were doing mischief and raising a storm.
The video mapping was composed in two parts consisting a looped unintrusive, but playful eerie atmosphere as well as a 15 minutes long live event once every evening.
While A-LI-CE worked for the visual part mainly with handmade drawings and paper collages which she digitized, animated and provided with effects in the post-production, I tried to retain this analog feeling and workflow in the music, too. The idea was to compose the music of the live part as a score for a FILM NOIR, early SCI-FI or HORROR movie of the late 50ties and 60ties including atmos and sounds. Starting vintage and orchestral, in the run of the show the music gets more and more electronic, but still keeps the character of the discribed genres.
Due to this and because I like a lot the TV-series THE TWILIGHT ZONE, I chose the first episode „Where is everybody?“ and recomposed its music, written by BERNARD HERRMANN. It’s composed in the scale of Olivier Messiaen’s 2nd mode, which gave me the possibility to change the mood of sound very quickly.
But before it gets to nerdy, please find here a sound sample of the beginning of the show, some images and a little video report made by the festival. Soon we will publish a little documentation video of the mapping, too. Unfortunately, we haven’t found the time yet:-(
* Thanks to Lisa Studer, Zeze Mago and the whole team of Musiques Volantes as well as to Tina Ayvaski, Christian Möltner and Joachim Reck of the Berlin-based technical company Eidotech GmbH for all your great support!
Video report of the whole festival:
However … if there is a music nerd outside, here are two JPGs with a table of the used chords and its connections. It was too much work to let it get mouldy in my drawer. Maybe one of you can use it …
